Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. is the oldest Greek-letter organization established in America by Black college women. Founded in 1908 under the direction of Ethel Hedgeman Lyle, Alpha Kappa Alpha has grown well beyond her birthplace of Howard University and has now expanded to her international home. Through a network of over 140,000 women in over 860 chapters, Alpha Kappa Alpha cultivates and encourages high scholastic and ethical standards; promotes unity and friendship among college women; studies and helps alleviate problems concerning girls and women; maintains a progressive interest in college life; and is of service to all mankind.
